Quick tips on coffee.
1) Buying coffee out is expensive. A small coffee from Starbucks is usually around $1.75. I usually buy Organic Free-Trade coffee priced anywhere from $8.99 to $13.99 per pound. Even at this more-expensive-than-Folgers price, I would start saving money anytime after my 8th 12-oz cup of coffee. And we all know that a pound of coffee goes much farther than that. #nobrainer
2) Iced coffee, you say? I was pleasantly surprised the other than when my pre-planning subconscious mind put coffee in the fridge. I live alone, so I often make more coffee than I will actually drink at one time. I have my cup or two and throw the rest in a glass jar in the fridge. I can have it later or even the next day over ice. I drink mine with cream, but if you sweeten yours, sweeten it while its still hot. Then cool it. Super easy.
**Another trick…if you are on a time crunch, make your coffee with 1/2 the amount of water. Pour the hot coffee over ice. When the ice melts, the coffee will be cool and of a strength you are used to. Pour over ice a second time and you have a delicious cup of iced coffee.
3) If you’re really super into convenience, Starbucks does sell liters of their iced coffee to certain grocery stores. I have seen the flavored Latte style almost everywhere (not recommended by me because they are packed full of sugar and calories and preservatives!) and have seen their iced coffee base (no flavor) at Walmart. Even at around $4.00 for the container, you can get about 6-8 cups of coffee out of these. Still cheaper than heading to the coffee-shop!
Of course, the coffee shop is still one of my favorite places to exist. I can concentrate to get work done, meet a friend or just relax. And I will allow myself this treat once a week. I don’t go every week, but even if I did, I’d be saving money because the other 6 days, its coffee from home. All the time.
